The Prize of Learning Love: The Life of Margaret Fawcett Norrie, Nova Scotia’s First Woman Senator, by Catherine Thompson. Trinity Publishing, 414 pages, $19.95
Margaret Fawcett Norrie, who died in 1983 at the age of 77, was a Liberal senator from Nova Scotia from 1972 to 1980, the first female senator from that province and only the fifth Canadian woman ever selected for the Senate. She was also a mother, a grandmother, a dairy farmer and a biology lecturer, who lived her life as a trailblazer for women, among them her daughter, Margaret Norrie McCain, who became lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick. As Thompson’s exhaustively researched biography indicates, she was also blessed with an abundance of love.
