I Cry for Innocence is a fascinating and moving story of civilians - particularly of one courageous woman and her three small children - caught, through no fault of their own, in the far-reaching tentacles of the second world war. At first, we see Liesel, her husband Willi and their three little girls, a two-year-old and six-week-old twins, living happily in the Dutch East Indies, unaware that they are about to be victimized by a conflict spawned in a Europe which they have left many years earlier.
Soon after war breaks out, Willi, a kind and peace-loving man, is arrested and interned by the Dutch simply because he is German. Overwhelmed by accounts of the German invasion of Holland, former friends become enemies overnight and do not raise a finger to help Liesel and her babies, despite the fact that she is half Dutch. She and the children are placed under detention and are eventually sent to Japan.
Liesel's struggle to sustain herself and her youngsters amidst mostly hostile circumstances is riveting. It is a story of love and loyalty which endures despite seemingly unsuperable odds. Although I Cry for Innocence is not at all preachy, it shows clearly how in wartime it is the innocent who suffer most. This is a story in which every line rings true.
